Car Guru\’s Response:
Hi Catrina,
Going by the priorities that you have selected, it seems that you’d like to have a bit of fun in your new wheels.
There are a number of cars that would satisfy your first priority of Looks/Style and as you may have guessed already, they are European.
The price you pay however for a good looker that has great ride and handling and is seen as rarely as Haley’s comet is the ongoing running costs.
The cars that I would consider that would be within your price bracket include the following:
– Alfa Romeo Giulietta
– Audi A1 Sportback
– Audi A3 Sportback
– Mercedes Benz A180
– VW Beetle
– Volvo V40
– Volvo C30
– Mini Cooper R56
– Citroen DS4
– Peugeot 208 Gti (manual only)
– Renault Clio RS200 (manual only)
– Renault Megane (manual only)
– VW Golf GTi
All of these cars look very nice and would more than satisfy your first priority. What helps their cause is that most of these cars aren’t very common
(which satisfies your third priority) as most people would opt to buy a bigger car, made locally, in Korea or in Japan, for the same money (and are cheaper to run).
You may have noticed that I have not included the BMW 116i. Now I know that looks/style are subjective, however I can categorically say that BMW may have lost some fans with this model.
It is downright ugly, and I’m not alone in this opinion.
How these cars rank for your second priority will determine your pick of the bunch. The two Renault cars would have been your perfect match if they were available with automatic transmissions.
Next in line for superior ride and handling would be the Alfa Romeo, VW Golf and Mini Cooper. The Mini Cooper is a little too harsh when it comes to the ride so unfortunately, this car drops off the short-list. This leaves the Golf and the Alfa, both equally impressive in this department.
Given the Alfa Romeo Giulietta is a more exclusive set of wheels, then that would be my choice.
Good luck with your car shopping.
